Polish Hackers Imprisoned for Casino Cyber Attack

January 2, 2014

All of us online gamblers worry about the security of our online casino play, so this piece of news goes to show just what happens to people who try and circumvent the security measures that most online casino operators have in place. Tow Polish hackers have been jailed in the UK for a cyber attack and attempted blackmail of a major UK based online casino site that has asked to remain anonymous.

The two Polish hackers were tracked down by the Serious Crime Division, and have been prosecuted and now jailed in the UK for over 5 years each. The hackers had attempted to demand 50% of the online casino be transferred to them, a large sum of cash, as the online casino in question, that was the target of the initial cyber attack, has a turnover of over £30 mill and employs over 60 members of staff.

Speaking on behalf of the Serious Crime Division, Detective Inspector Chris Mossop has said that, "With millions of pounds and potentially dozens of jobs involved, Smirnow and Surmacki were playing for incredibly high stakes and clearly knew what they were doing. They used their intimate, expert knowledge of online business to attempt to bully the victims into submission. But make no mistake, they may have been using the latest technology, but this was simply good old-fashioned blackmail."

It was the Manchester branch of the Serious Crime Division that tracked down the two hackers, after they had managed to disrupt the operation of the online casino, and then come forward with their amazing blackmail demand to be given 50 of the online casino in question.

It’s great to see the Serious Crime Division act so swiftly, and so professionally, to bring these rogue hackers to justice. It just goes to show that despite being a somewhat grey market in the UK, nevertheless, online casino sites are given due respect by law enforcement agencies. This should make all of us online gamblers feel much safer, knowing that police forces are there, waiting to step in and help out when an online casino gets in trouble.
