William Hill Leaves Asia

August 23, 2013

Online gambling laws change frequently. For most reputable online gambling companies, it is a constant exercise in walking a fine line, to stay one step ahead of these changes. Sometimes, it just becomes too difficult for online casino operators to keep changing to meet the requirement of local online gambling laws, and so it becomes a better option to pull out of that particular local market entirely.

William Hill has just confronted this very same decision, due to the ever increasingly complicated online gambling laws in many Asian countries. So it has decided to stop offering online casino services in China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

William Hill is licensed and regulated in Gibraltar, but this has very little impact upon the company’s online casino operations in Asia. We also need to consider the fact that William Hill is one of the major online casino operators that are hoping to break into the emerging, legal USA online gambling market. It makes sense for the company to close its online casino in countries that are problematic, and focus its efforts on markets that are less problematic, and this possibly more profitable in the long term.

William Hill has stated that the reason for them withdrawing their online casino from China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan is due to circumstances beyond their control. William Hill emailed its entire affiliate network, to tell them that on August 19th, it would be suspending all accounts of players residing in China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Players would still be able to log in and withdraw any outstanding balance that they still have in the William Hill online casino, but that this was all that they would be able to do.

William Hill recently announced a new trading partnership with online gambling software developer Bally Technology, and it is likely that part of the decision to withdraw from the Asian online gambling market is based on the fact that William Hill is going to be leveraging the value of this new partnership as it enters into the open online gambling market in Delaware and Nevada. So it’s bad news for Asian online gamblers who were William Hill members, but good news for the rest of the world.
