European Online Gambling

January 23, 2013

European gambling legislation is actually quite confusing. All EU member countries have a set of best practice guidelines that were developed by the European Commission that they can choose to implement. Alternatively, they are free to make changes, and adopt a totally localized version of online gambling legislation.

Back in October, the European Commission produced and published that is intended to help devise a comprehensive European framework for online gambling. Those are their words, not ours, and we don’t really understand what this talk of a comprehensive framework is, surely it’s just a case of deciding what online gambling legislation fits in the modern age, and adopting this as best practice? Typical Euro MP’s, with nothing better to do than make noise.

So what is this new framework supposed to do? Well, it will ensure that all online gambling related companies and online casino sites are regulated under EU law. It will help to supervise and administer online gambling in Europe. It will protect consumers as well as make sure that vulnerable people like minors are not exposed to online gambling. It will work towards keeping sports fair, without some form of rigging taking place to influence the outcome.

Quite frankly, we think this is all just hot air. Each EU member country already has online gambling legislation in place that covers these things. We don’t need more/stricter online gambling legislation; we need a less restrictive market for online casino sites to operate within!

The European online gambling market has been growing by 15% annually for the last few years. This is despite the rather draconian gambling legislation hat online casino operators have to work under. Annual revenue form online gambling in Europe could hit as high as €13,000,000,000 by 2015, and this is a huge chunk of change to be taxed. The European Commission needs to go back to the table, and put together some new guidelines that help online gambling companies and online casino operators to produce this revenue, as we are sure every EU member country could darn well do with the tax income!

It is amazing to think that whilst the U.S.A is becoming more progressive, even going so far as to issue online gambling licenses to American online casino operators, that the EU is still standing with its head stuck in the sand. When will the buffoons wake up and realize that online gambling is here to stay? Stop trying to bury it, just grab the tax revenue.
