How to use a VPN for Online Gambling

August 8, 2013

It is a sad truth, that if you are an online gambling fan living in certain countries, then many online casino sites will be blocked in your location. This usually means that online gambling is simply not an option in these countries, but there is a way around this, by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access your chosen online casino site.

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN as it is usually called, creates a tunnel between your computer, and the computer that is providing the VPN service. So, if you were for examples sake in Australia, but your favorite online casino is blocked, you could connect to a VPN in the USA, and it would look just like you were in America, your geolocation becomes that of the VPN server.

Now, there are two ways to gain access to a Virtual Private Network. The first is to use one of the monthly subscription VPN providers. However, this is often not the best option, as they very seldom offer a fully transparent proxy connection. This means the online casino can actually trace you back to your location of origin.

The best way to make sure you are always behind a transparent proxy, and thus ensure your online gambling is never traced back to your home, is to set up your own VPN using OpenVPN, an open source Virtual Private Network solution.

Doing this is not simple, but there are plenty of guides online. The first thing you will need to do is rent a Virtual Private Server (VPS) in a location that allows access to your chosen online casino. These can be rented very cheaply, usually for a few dollars a month. A VPS is a virtual computer, and it will come with its own fixed IP address. You can then install the OpenVPN server application on this VPS, and connect to it using the OpenVPN client on your PC.

When you connect in this way, you are completely secured, as OpenVPN encrypts all internet traffic between your PC and your OpenVPN server. Furthermore, the default installation of OpenVPN sets it up as a transparent proxy. Also, as you have your own fixed IP address, it is less likely that your online casino site will highlight a problem connection, due to the same IP address being used by multiple players, as could happen with one of the subscription VPN services.

Setting up your own private OpenVPN Virtual Private Network is the only sure fire way of keeping your online gambling activities hidden, to physical change your geolocation, and to remain entirely secure.
