The Future of Online Slots in 2012

December 29, 2011

As the year comes to a close, we thought it might be a nice idea to take a look at what we think may be in store for online slots players in 2012. The past year has been quite an eventful one for online casino operators and gamblers who enjoy playing online slots. So based on last year’s events, what do we think is going to happen in the coming year?

Solidified Gambling Legislation

The second part of 2011 was a dark time for online casinos, as several key Western governments, including the UK, USA and Ireland began to take a close look at both gambling legislation, and the current gambling tax situation. Although several of the happenings which occurred (such as the big three online poker sites being targeted by the US attorney’s office for money laundering), we think that overall this is a good thing. In 2012 we expect that most major governments will solidify their approach to dealing with offshore online casino operators, making online gambling safer.

Mass Mobile Migration

Mobile online slots are becoming big business. Cryptologic were the first, Microgaming joined the fray a few weeks ago, and now Net Entertainment has jumped on the bandwagon. Playtech cannot be far behind. As smartphone and pad computing technology matures, it becomes increasingly easy to port successful online sots to the mobile environment. Couple this with the growing availability of mobile broadband products around the world, and we are setting the scene for a mobile online slots revolution. We definitely expect mobile online slots to play a big part in 2012. How long before a mobile online slot pays out a multi-million dollar progressive jackpot? Not long, that’s for sure.

Massive Jackpots

This is a no brainer; statistically the size of jackpot payouts, especially progressive jackpots, has increased annually. We fully expect 2012 to be an incredible year for lucky jackpot winners. As the trend towards networked progressive jackpot online slots increases, we don’t think it will be long until we hit an amazing $50,0000 payout, possibly in this coming year.

Online Slots Hybrids

Take a look at the major online slots of the last year. Lord of the Rings, Immortal Romance, and a whole range of other online gambling games which although can be loosely termed an online sot, are actually a whole lot more. Once again, technology is enabling online casinos to deploy fully interactive multi-media gambling games akin to their arcade machine counterparts. In 2012 we expect these hybrid online slots to become the most popular.

So there you have it, our take on what we think will happen in 2012. It will be interesting to check back this time next year and see how right we were!
