European Online Gambling Changes

June 5, 2012

As online slots players, we are governed by the same law and legislation as other types of on line gambling. Online casino operators often set up shop off shore to avoid the headache of gambling legislation in Europe and the USA. However, the situation is slowly opening up, we take a look at a few changes in Europe in May.

Denmark – Earlier this year Denmark began to take a closer look at legislation which applies to online gambling. Last month, one of the first changes to the way online casino operators, including those that offer video slots, will need to work. Online gambling companies are no longer allowed to advertise in Denmark in any shape or form, on the internet, in print or on radio and TV.

Ireland – At the end of last year we reported on some news that Ireland was making some sweeping changes to tax legislation and the way it applies to online casino operators. However, it has just been announced that these changes are going to be delayed, and pushed back to 2014, to allow the Irish government to concentrate on more critical issues.

Italy – The Online Gambling Regulator of Italy has recently made available its figures of online gambling revenue. In the last twelve months there has been an increase of 16.4%, which represents a gross revenue of €67.7 million. However, this was not made up of an awful lot of online slot cash, it was predominantly generated by online poker, not video slot players.

Spain – The Spanish gambling authority has stated that there will be a short delay in preparing the new online gambling licenses for online casino operators this year. Technical problems have caused this delay, but the licenses should go out on or around the 5th of June.

So there we have it, there have not been any really major changes with European online gambling legislation in the last month. Online casino operators still need to jump through hoops to operate in Europe and us, the online slots players, still need to play at casinos outside of our home countries in the most part.
