Zynga Consider Online Gambling

January 24, 2012

In 2009 a simple (by current standards) Adobe Flash game took Facebook by storm. Within days of it being launched, FarmVille by Zynga became the most popular Facebook application by far, outstripping the previously top slot Mafia Wars by a huge percentage. Fast forward three years and Zynga now operate dozens of high quality Adobe Flash games across multiple social networking sites including Facebook and the newly launched Google+. In effect, Zynga are the social gaming market leader.

More recently, Zynga released Zynga Poker on both the Facebook and Google+ social networking platform, and it became an instant hit, now currently boasting more than 7 million people playing each day. This makes it the world’s largest online poker room by far, but there is a snag, this is not a cash play game, purely play money.

So it really is no surprise that Zynga, following the success of Zynga Poker, have begun to consider moving into the more traditional online casino sector. Look at the facts; they have reams of experience in not only developing quality browser based games, but more importantly building gaming communities. They also have a massive ready made following of loyal fans. They have an unprecedented level of reach in the browser game market. They also have dozens of potential trading partners just queuing up to jump on the Zynga bandwagon. Now, if we add to this mix the current new direction that the U.S. Government is heading in regarding on-line gambling, then we have to conclude that Zynga would be foolish not to exploit their position, coupled with the new freedom for U.S. based providers to operate legally in the online casino market.

If Zynga do indeed enter the marketplace, then it is likely to entirely destroy the current status quo between the top online gaming developers such as Playtech, Microgaming and Net Entertainment. Currently these developers concentrate more upon downloadable games, mostly online slots, their Adobe Flash portfolios often lag behind. Zynga come to the game with an entirely opposite angle, they excel in developing feature rich, graphically impressive Adobe Flash games. This could lead to a massive influx of quality browser based online slots and online gambling games which will be instantly playable on the full spectrum of browsers and mobile platforms. Zynga could cash in big here, and we see this as great news for us the online slots players.
